Personal Privacy in the Age of IoT

The Internet of Things is all about data, which is needed to make all the decisions and to deliver services to the customers.  But, if you are not careful, this data collection can really backfire – and this is just the beginning:

Take Standard Innovation Corp., maker of the We-Vibe massager and its We-Connect app. An Illinois woman identified as N.P. has won a $3.75 million settlement against the firm for collecting her personal data without her permission, The Chicago Tribunereports.  (source)

Besides the financial settlement, the company now has to destroy the data it gathered, and stop collecting emails and personal user information.  Which, probably, renders their products useless. Read more about this here.

Lesson to learn:  neglecting the privacy concerns of your customers and not being diligent legally can destroy your company. This is the lesson for everyone developing products for the future world of connected humans and devices.
